DataPLANT Joins 2nd NFDI Overall Architecture Workshop

Wed Apr 15 2026

DataPLANT and de.NBI / Galaxy took part in the second Overall Architecture (OA) Workshop of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) held in Aachen, building on progress made during the inaugural meeting in November in Göttingen. The earlier workshop produced a first shared architectural vision, further developed in a recent technical paper

The latest workshop aimed to broaden participation by inviting additional NFDI consortia into the OA discussion and to advance alignment around some “OneNFDI Service stack” layer model. Key objectives also included shaping an architecture for EOSC National Node services, identifying requirements for wider adoption, and initiating steps toward improved service interoperability.

On the first day discussions were organized into thematic barcamps covering cloud infrastructure (including multi-cloud and cloud-native approaches), interoperability and standardization, community-specific needs for OA adoption, IAM and accounting as well as service portfolio management across Base4NFDI and consortium-level SaaS offerings. The workshop concluded with a discussion of the DFG Storage call for the NFDI and its implications for the future provider landscape, including initial ideas for how consortia might access and integrate shared storage services.
